The State Academy for Public Administration (SAPA) promotes excellence in public service and fosters commitment to the highest standards of performance and integrity in public administration throughout New York State.

We strive to meet this mission by providing professional development opportunities for early- and mid-career professionals in state and local government and in nongovernmental organizations working with government.

Stephen Schechter Essentials Program in Public Service Leadership
The Stephen Schechter Essentials Program in Public Service Leadership is a program open to early- and mid-career professionals who seek or recently obtained a managerial position (overseeing a program area and/or staff) in state or local government or in a nongovernmental organization working with government. The program consists of a series of evening sessions held monthly beginning in September and continuing through May each year. Each month, presenters focus on a topic that relates to a larger issue or theme of direct practical relevance to state and local public service today.

Sharp Skills Sessions
Sharp Skills Sessions are robust panel discussions about practical skills needed to advance professional performance in any sector or industry. Sessions are moderated by members of the SAPA Board and feature experienced public administration professionals who impart wisdom gained throughout their careers. Attendees are encouraged in ask questions and interact with panelists and other attendees.

Leaders Learn Sessions Sessions
Sharp Skills Sessions are robust panel discussions about practical skills needed to advance professional performance in any sector or industry. Sessions are moderated by members of the SAPA Board and feature experienced public administration professionals who impart wisdom gained throughout their careers. Attendees are encouraged in ask questions and interact with panelists and other attendees.

Mentorship Mixers
Mentorship mixers introduce attendees to a panel of seasoned professionals. Panelists share the path they traveled in their careers and give advice to early- and mid-career professionals to help them build their careers. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and participate in discussions. There is plenty of time for networking with panelists and attendees.

SAPA Networking Events
SAPA Networking Events allow the opportunity for attendees to socialize and network with professionals across the government and education sectors. Professionals at all stages of their careers, as well as retirees, are welcome to attend.
